RESOLUTION NO. 160261

Recognizing Jackson County CASA’s role of advocating for the most vulnerable citizens, abused and neglected children and declaring April 14, 2016, as Light of Hope Day in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, Judge David Soukup, the presiding judge of King County Superior Court in Seattle, Washington, growing frustrated with making decisions about a child’s welfare without enough family background, created the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program; and

WHEREAS, CASA uses trained community volunteers to speak for abused and neglected children’s best interests in court so judges have all the facts to make the best decision for the long-term welfare of each child; and

WHEREAS, Jackson County CASA has been providing guardian ad litem (legal advocacy) services for abused and neglected children and youth, birth to age 21, who enter the Jackson County Family Court system since 1983 and is one of over 900 programs nationwide and 24 statewide; and

WHEREAS, Jackson County CASA’s staff and volunteers work to secure safe, permanent homes for children and advocate for appropriate medical, educational and therapeutic resources for children under court jurisdiction expecting to serve more than 1,170 children this year by partnering with philanthropic and civic organizations, local businesses, government entities, volunteers and individual donors; and

WHEREAS, Jackson County CASA will host its 16th Annual Light of Hope Breakfast on April 14, 2016; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council do hereby declare April 14, 2016, as Light of Hope Day in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Jackson County CASA with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for their dedication to helping the children in our community.
