ORDINANCE NO. 170185

 

Authorizing an agreement with Kansas City Area Transit Authority for the development and implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit System generally along Prospect Avenue from Downtown (Barney Allis Plaza) to 75th Street and directing the City Clerk to file documents with the appropriate offices.

 

WHEREAS, by Ordinance No. 031288, the City and Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) expressed a common interest in the development of a major transit plan that would implement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along certain city streets; and

 

WHEREAS, in July 2005, the KCATA implemented the first BRT line, known as Metro Area Express or MAX generally along Main Street linking the River Market, Government Complex, Convention Center, Crown Center and Country Club Plaza with fast, frequent and reliable bus service; and

 

WHEREAS, the City and KCATA wish to continue their partnership and implement the next phase of BRT along Prospect Avenue; and

 

WHEREAS, the new BRT route will generally follow the Prospect corridor from 75th Street to downtown connecting Kansas City residents to jobs and activity centers including Alphapointe, Research Hospital, the Linwood Shopping Center redevelopment, Bluford Library, East Patrol and Barney Allis Plaza in downtown; and

 

WHEREAS, the current Prospect Avenue transit service has the second highest ridership of any KCATA transit route with more than 125,000 boardings per month; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. Authorizing the City Manager to execute a Cooperative Agreement with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority for the development and implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit System generally along Prospect Avenue from Downtown (Barney Allis Plaza) to 75th Street. A copy of the agreement in substantial form is available in the office of the Director of Public Works.

 

Section 2. That the City Clerk is hereby directed to file a copy of this ordinance, together with the Cooperative Agreement, with the office of the Secretary of State of Missouri and with the Department of Records of Jackson County, Missouri.
