RESOLUTION NO. 010730

 

Declaring May 18-19, 2001, as Relay for Life in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, on May 18-19, 2001, Relay for Life will raise funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer in the community by having a team relay event from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. which will be held at the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District; and

 

WHEREAS, Relay for Life was started in 1985 by Dr. Gordon Klatt walking and running 81 miles around a track at the University of Puget Sounds Baker Field for twenty-four hours and raising approximately $27,000.00 for the American Cancer Society; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1986, nineteen teams joined him and the original Relay for Life was started with this years slogan as Under the stars...into the light...a celebration of life; and

 

WHEREAS, one mans dream is now an event taking place in over 2800 communities across the country as well as in the U.S. Territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Mariana Islands; and

 

WHEREAS, because cancer touches everyone in some way, this is an important opportunity for the entire community to come together and get involved; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission statement of the American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May 18-19, 2001, as Relay for Life in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Stephanie Griffith, KCMO Relay for Life Chair, and Frank Ellis, Jr., Honorary Chair, with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City in their efforts in the fight against cancer.
