RESOLUTION NO. 160766

 

Declaring the month of October 2016 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City, Missouri and recognizing the work of the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

WHEREAS, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among American women affecting roughly 240,000 women, and 2,600 men each year, which leads to over 40,000 people dying of breast cancer yearly; and

WHEREAS, statistics show 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer and it is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 15-54; and

WHEREAS, the discovery that breast cancer is not one disease, but many, shows support for increased funding for genetic research and treatment is critically needed; and

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation have invested in breakthrough research that have resulted in dramatic improvements in cancer research, treatment and early detection thus there are over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month increases the public’s awareness about breast cancer, the importance of screening and early detection, and the need for funding for research and better treatments; and

WHEREAS, on October 13th the City Council will stand in solidarity with those battling breast cancer, at risk for breast cancer and to salute the women and men who dedicate themselves to the prevention, detection, and treatment of Breast Cancer. NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of October 2016 to be "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Kansas City, Missouri and;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof is presented to Shontrice Patillo, Bridgett Myers and Carli Good with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens of Kansas City to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
