RESOLUTION NO. 160814

 

Recognizing and welcoming the delegation from Yan’an, China

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Snow was a journalist from Kansas City, Missouri, who had visited in Yan’an, China to interview Mao Zedong after the Long March; and

 

WHEREAS, as a result of this interview Edgar Snow wrote the book “Red Star Over China” in the late 1930’s which was the western world’s first look at Communism in China, and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Snow continued to work for improvement in U.S. – China relations which help resulted in the visit of President Richard Nixon to China in 1973; and

 

WHEREAS, the Edgar Snow Memorial Foundation continues to work to improve U.S. – China relations; and

 

WHEREAS, the work of the Edgar Snow Memorial Foundation has resulted in mutual agreements between Yan’an, China, and Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, a delegation from Yan’an, China, is visiting Kansas City, Missouri, on October 19th through 21st led by Yao, Jingjiang (Executive Vice Mayor of Yan’an) to investigate partnership opportunities in education and medicine; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and City Council hereby recognize and welcome the delegation from Yan’an, China; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the delegation from Yan’an, China with the Mayor and Council expressing its desire for long and fruitful relationships with that City and its institutions.
