RESOLUTION NO. 100558

Expressing the intent of the City Council in regards to City financial support of the Jackson County Sports Authority and continuation of County Urban Road System (CURS) funding.

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City has been a financial supporter of the Truman Sports Complex since the early 1990's; and

WHEREAS, Truman Sports Complex is an important regional asset that will host the 2012 Major League All-Star Game among other important sporting events; and

WHEREAS, budget reductions over the past two years have required the City to reduce its annual support from $2 million to $1.53 million per year; and

WHEREAS, an approximate total of $6.6 million remain available in County Urban Road System (CURS) funds that are designated for projects in Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, $770,000.00 of those funds would fully honor the City's commitment for calendar years 2009 and 2010 to the Jackson County Sports Authority; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the City Manager is hereby directed to work with Jackson County staff to use $770,000.00 of available CURS funds to satisfy the 2009 and 2010 funding requirements for the Jackson County Sports Authority.

Section 2. That the City of Kansas City encourages Jackson County to work with the City and the teams to develop an alternative means of financing stadium maintenance such as a Community Improvement District for calendar year 2011 and beyond.

Section 3. That the City of Kansas City will reconsider its financial commitment to the stadiums should Jackson County decide to eliminate CURS funding or other County programs that are of primary benefit to Kansas City, Missouri residents.
