RESOLUTION NO. 180219

Congratulating the two Platte County High School (PCHS) music ensembles, Sound Express and the Wind Ensemble, on their performance at the Missouri Music Educators Association Convention (MMEA) on January 25, 2018.

WHEREAS, the MMEA is a federated association of The National Association for Music Education, which includes nearly 80,000 Music Educators dedicated to providing a comprehensive, well-balanced, sequential, and quality education to every child in America; and

WHERAS, Platte County High School’s music ensemble, Sound Express, is an audition ensemble comprised of 32 students in grades 10-12, directed by Brian von Glahn and the Wind Ensemble is an audition ensemble comprised of 68 instrumental students this year, directed by Dr. Jay Jones; and

WHEREAS, this is the first time two groups from PCHS have been selected to perform in the same year and of the 172 ensembles that auditioned, only six high school choirs and eight high school bands were chosen; and

WHEREAS, music education is an important part of overall education, in that students involved in music consistently do better in school than those who are not involved in music; and

WHEREAS, students who take music in middle school and high school show consistently higher levels of mathematics proficiency than those who do not and schools with music programs have higher attendance and graduation rates compared with their non-music counterparts; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the two Platte County High School (PCHS) music ensembles, Sound Express and the Wind Ensemble, on their impressive performance at the Missouri Music Educators Association Convention (MMEA) on January 25, 2018; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Sound Express and the Wind Ensemble of the Platte County High School with the respect and appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City in celebration of their success.
