RESOLUTION NO. 170137

Declaring February 26-March 4, 2017, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, eating disorders are a complex biologically based medical/psychiatric illness that affect over 30 million Americans and more than half a million Missourians; and

  WHEREAS, anyone can develop an eating disorder, regardless of race, gender, age or socioeconomic class; and

WHEREAS, the median age for onset is about 12- to 13-years-of age; and

WHEREAS, left untreated, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses combined; and

WHEREAS, prompt, intensive treatment significantly improves the chances of recovery; and

WHEREAS, the 2017 theme for the National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is “It’s Time to Talk About It”; and

WHEREAS, the Kansas City chapter of the Missouri Eating Disorder Association, can provide resources to sufferers and families and make presentations to schools to continue to raise awareness of and shatter the myths surrounding eating disorders; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare February 26-March 4, 2017, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ashley Bough, for her work talking about eating disorders, with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens to increase awareness, education, and services for eating disorders which impact millions of people each year.
