RESOLUTION NO. 190346

Recognizing Thursday, May, 2, 2019, as National Day of Prayer.

WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer was first signed into law by Harry S. Truman in 1952 and the first Thursday in May was designated as National Day of Prayer in 1988 by Ronald Reagan and every President subsequently has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation and there have been over 1,419 federal and state calls to prayer since 1775; and

WHEREAS, prayer has been the foundation of American culture, with the first call to prayer in the United States occurring in 1775, when the founding fathers asked the colonies for God’s wisdom when forming a new nation. Abraham Lincoln also called for such a day in 1863, in which there would be, “humiliation, fasting, and prayer”; and

WHEREAS, according to Scripture, Christians have a spiritual duty to pray. Scripture also states that ardent prayer is the most effective and God heeds the pleas of his children. The theme for 2019 is “Love One Another,” based upon John 13:34 “Love one another, just as I have loved you” which challenges us to mobilize unified public prayer for America. We can pray more than ever before, and practice extraordinary prayer for the next great move of God in America that will catapult the message of the gospel nationally and internationally; and

WHEREAS, the goal of National Day of Prayer is to rally the millions of Christians across the country to pray for government, church, military, family, education, media, and business. The National Day of Prayer unites Christians of all backgrounds to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture. Roughly 2 million people participate at 30,000 observances every year; and

WHEREAS, recognizing and celebrating May 2, 2019, as National Day of Prayer; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby observe this national tradition of National Day of Prayer; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Kansas City Police Department and City of Kansas City Chaplain, Pastor Shane Stamm of Open Bible Baptist Church, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for dedicated service to our city and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
