RESOLUTION NO. 051054
Declaring August 29-September 2,
2005, as a week to honor and appreciate the Good Samaritan Project.
WHEREAS, Kansas Citys Good Samaritan Project is commemorating its twentieth anniversary throughout
the last week of August 2005; and
WHEREAS, the
Good Samaritan Project is one of four AIDS service organizations in Kansas City, Missouri. It was established in 1985 by volunteers who believed a coordinated
response to the AIDS epidemic was crucial to the well-being and survival of
people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS; and
WHEREAS, the
mission of the Good Samaritan Project is to provide supportive and responsive
care for a diverse community of people affected by AIDS/HIV and to raise
awareness of AIDS/HIV through education and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, as part
of the Good Samaritan Projects anniversary commemoration, there will be a
Week of Awareness August 29-September 1, 2005. This will include a number of
events and activities, including a client appreciation picnic and cook-out, HIV
testing at no charge, a skate-a-thon and awareness outreach including live
radio broadcasts and a candlelight vigil to remember the deceased and to renew
interest in HIV/AIDS. The vigil will be held at Liberty Memorial on September
1st; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby declare August 29-September 2, 2005, as a week to honor and
appreciate the Good Samaritan Project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this
Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and
that a copy hereof be presented to Kathleen Cooper, Jimmy Woodcock and Chana
Collins with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council to its founders and its
many volunteers for the contributions made to this community over the past
twenty years and its efforts to help the people of the greater Kansas City
metropolitan area.
