RESOLUTION NO. 950782

 

Declaring the weekend of June 24 and 25, 1995, to be Household Hazardous Waste Clean Up Days in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, improper use, storage, and disposal of hazardous products and waste generated from homes can pose a threat to human health and the environment; and

 

WHEREAS, households in the City generate an estimated three million pounds of household hazardous waste annually; and

 

WHEREAS, 42,261 children up to the age of 12 were treated for poisonings resulting from improper use, storage, and disposal of hazardous products in 1994 in Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, households in the City previously have not had a dedicated way or means for proper disposal of this household hazardous waste; and

 

WHEREAS, non-point source pollution from improper disposal of this household hazardous waste contributes to the degradation of our community's air, soil and water; and

 

WHEREAS, the City has various departments dedicated to the protection of the health and safety of citizens and dedicated to the protection of our community's air, water and land; and

 

WHEREAS, various citizens, civic groups, educational and religious institutions, non-governmental organizations, and businesses in Kansas City, Missouri, are actively addressing the protection of our community's health and environmental well-being and have volunteered to work on issues related to safe use, storage, and proper disposal of household hazardous materials and waste; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Council is deeply concerned about hazards to the children and citizens of this community and our responsibility to the environment for this and future generations; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the weekend of June 24 and 25, 1995, be declared Household Hazardous Waste Clean Up Days and that the City of Kansas City, its citizens, civic groups, educational and religious institutions, non-governmental organizations, and businesses unite in their efforts to protect personal health, and the health of our watersheds, air, and land by collecting and removing unwanted hazardous products and wastes from our home and properly disposing of their household pollutants by bringing them to the Kansas City, Missouri Environmental Campus.
