RESOLUTION NO. 160804

 

Expressing solidarity with the opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline construction and directing the City Clerk to forward copies of this resolution to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council, the City’s U.S. Congressional delegation and President Barack Obama.

 

WHEREAS, the Dakota Access Pipeline would carry more than a half million barrels (per day) of crude oil fracked from the Bakken shale oil fields of North Dakota to Illinois, passing over sensitive landscapes, cultural resources and across or under rivers and tributaries, including the Missouri River; and

 

WHEREAS, transitioning from a fossil fuel based economy to an economy fueled by clean and renewable energy sources is consistent with the City’s adopted Climate Protection Plan, and protection of natural resources is of critical importance to our citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, the City is geographically situated on the Missouri River and shares an interest with those communities concerned with protection of their critical drinking water sources; and

 

WHEREAS, Native Americans are known to have made many contributions that have enhanced freedom, prosperity and greatness throughout our history and that protection of their cultural resources is critical to the preservation of our collective history; and

 

WHEREAS, by Resolution No. 071327, November has been declared “Native American Month” in order to ensure that Native Americans should forever continue to be acknowledged by the City as a people of great dignity, perseverance and pride; and

WHEREAS, on August 15, 2016, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council called on people around the world to issue resolutions in support of the Standing Rock Sioux and their efforts to protect their land, water and cultural resources; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby declare their support for the opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline construction.

 

Section 2. That the City Clerk is directed to forward copies of this resolution to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council, the City’s U.S. Congressional delegation and President Barack Obama.
