RESOLUTION NO. 950617

 

Honoring Kansas City Life Insurance Company on its 100th Anniversary and declaring Friday, May 5, 1995, "Kansas City Life Day".

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Life Insurance Company was founded in 1895 with Major William Warner serving as its first president and S.E. Rumble serving as its first secretary; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Life has been and continues to be served by the following strong and talented individuals serving as president: Major William Warner, 1895-1899; H.W. Halbert, 1899-1904; J.B. Reynolds, 1904-1937; D.T. Tarrens, 1937-1939; W.E. Bixby, Sr., 1939-1964; J.R. Bixby, 1964-1990; and W.E. Bixby, Jr., 1990-to Present; and

 

WHEREAS, the first policies issued by Kansas City Life were issued in the amount of $1,000.00 to $5,000.00 with the first claim being paid on November 5, 1895; and

 

WHEREAS, during the thirty-three year leadership of J.B. Reynolds, the company made tremendous strides: business in force grew from $2,000,000.00 in 1904 to more than $391,500,000.00 in 1929 and assets during this period rose from $213,000.00 to $59,400,000.00; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Life, which built its landmark home office in 1924 at 3520 Broadway, successfully surmounted the challenges of World War I; while many companies adopted a war clause, Kansas City Life paid all claims for war deaths; and

 

WHEREAS, under the talented leadership of W.E. Bixby and J.R. Bixby the company has continued to enjoy steady growth, reaching $610 million of insurance in force in 1945 and in 1979, the company attained the notable milestone of $1 billion in assets; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Life continues to be a strong force with corporate assets totaling more than $2.6 billion with $20 billion of life insurance in force; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Kansas City Life Insurance Company on its outstanding growth and on its 100th Anniversary and further declare Friday, May 5, 1995, as "Kansas City Life Day" in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council and that a copy hereof be presented to Kansas City Life Insurance Company in token of the Council's pride in and appreciation of Kansas City Life.
