RESOLUTION NO. 150354

 

Recognizing and honoring the Community Christian Church of Kansas City, Missouri on the occasion of its 125th Anniversary.

 

WHEREAS, in 1888, the Community Christian Church traces its establishment to a boy’s Sunday School class taught by Miss Ellen Hackett, and in 1890, the church was formally organized at 31st and Cherry Streets, with 25 charter members; and

 

WHEREAS, the church was led by Dr. T. P. Haley from 1903 until 1907, when he named Dr. Burris A. Jenkins, an original Sunday School boy, as his successor, and the church became “Linwood Boulevard Christian Church” and dedicated a new building at Linwood and Forest, and in 1917 declared its "Open Membership" policy, and in 1930 became “Community Church” to indicate its identity as “everybody’s church;” and

 

WHEREAS, on Halloween night , 1939, the church’s building burned, leading Dr. Jenkins to secure Frank Lloyd Wright as its architect for a new edifice at the corner of 46th and Main Streets, which was dedicated on January 4, 1942 and in 1994, its “Steeple of Light” was first illuminated as a beacon of beauty and inspiration for the city; and

 

WHEREAS, since 1975, Community Christian Church has operated a prodigious food pantry and sponsored multiple mission trips to impoverished regions in the United States and abroad, was a founding member of M.O.R.E.2 (The Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity), abides as a church that embraces diversity and champions the inherent value of all people, serves as a catalyst for interfaith and interracial solidarity, and sponsors music events year round, including premier jazz concerts; and

 

WHEREAS, the following have served as Senior Ministers of the congregation: Thomas Preston Haley, Burris Atkins Jenkins, Frank Johnson Pippin, Harold Glen Brown, R. Michael Waco, and Robert Lee Hill; and

 

WHEREAS, Community Christian Church is now positioned to begin even greater service for its members, the city, the nation, and the world; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and City Council congratulate Community Christian Church for its 125 years of service to the people of Kansas City, the nation and the world; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Community Christian Church, with the appreciation of the citizens of Kansas City for being “a church in the heart of the city that takes the welfare of the city to heart,” for the past 125 years and for years to come.
