RESOLUTION NO. 140344

 

Expressing support for the Water Services Department in promoting urban agriculture and assisting local community groups and farmers access water for their gardens and farms through a water assistance program.

 

WHEREAS, access to water has been identified as an impediment to the development of urban agriculture; and

 

WHEREAS, the Water Services Department has developed a water assistance program which will be launched as “KC Grow” to help local community groups and farmers access water for their gardens and farms, and is ready to retain Kansas City Community Gardens, Inc. to administer this program; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Community Gardens, Inc. is prepared to administer the program, including offering oversight, support, technical assistance, grant administration and water audits to local community groups and farmers; and

 

WHEREAS, the State of Missouri has enacted and the City of Kansas City, Missouri is considering enacting legislation to provide for Urban Agricultural Zones for the combined purpose of promoting the local production of produce or other agricultural products, raising and processing of livestock or poultry, sale of predominantly locally grown foods on blighted land, redeveloping or reusing idle and/or blighted urban properties, promoting innovation in agriculture and sustainable land use practices, eliminating food deserts, creating urban agriculture employment opportunities, expanding local agriculture-related business, and improving access to locally grown, processed and marketed healthy foods; NOW THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the City Council hereby expresses its support for the Water Services Department in promoting urban agriculture and assisting local community groups and farmers access water for their gardens and farms through a water assistance program.
