RESOLUTION NO. 950657

Commending Brookside Care Center, Inc. for its commitment to homeless and runaway youth.

WHEREAS, in the Kansas City metropolitan area an estimated 2,000 children are homeless; and

WHEREAS, oftentimes the major forces precipitating Kansas City's runaway and homeless youth population are sexual, physical and emotional abuse, economic depression, parental drug abuse and neglect; and.

WHEREAS, Brookside is the only shelter in Jackson County for homeless and runaway children who fall outside of the law enforcement, child welfare, mental health and juvenile justice systems; and

WHEREAS, Brookside's mission is to provide comprehensive residential treatment for homeless and runaway youth in a family-centered environment; and

WHEREAS, although Brookside has been providing a variety of services to the community since 1986, on August 1, 1994 it reopened its doors to focus solely on homeless and runaway youth due to the declining community conditions for the children traditionally serviced by Brookside; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council commend Brookside Care Center, Inc. for its commitment to the homeless and runaway youth population of Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and a copy provided to Ms. Shirley Miller, Executive Director of Brookside.
