RESOLUTION NO. 180197

 

Honoring and recognizing Manuel Reyes for his many contributions to Kansas City, its Latino community, and community journalism, as we remember his legacy posthumously.

 

WHEREAS, Manuel Reyes was a longtime civic leader who would have turned 80 years old in May, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2018 after a short illness; and

 

WHEREAS, Manuel was co-founder and publisher of Dos Mundos newspaper, Kansas City’s first bi-lingual newspaper; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Reyes has received such honors as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Hispanic Publications, the Top 100 Hispanics in the Media by the Hispanic Media Association, a special achievement award from the National Association of Hispanic Publications, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City’s Small Business of the Year Award; and

 

WHEREAS, Manuel’s civic involvement included the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Westside Business Association, American G. I. Forum, National Federation of Hispanic Owned Publications, Fiesta Bullwhacker Days Olathe Kansas, the Westside Fountain Committee and more. He co-founded the Southwest Boulevard Business Association; and

 

WHEREAS, for his many contributions to the community over a lifetime, Mr. Reyes has been the recipient of numerous awards. Among those are the Guadalupe Center’s I, Pat Rios Award, the Greater Kansas City National Hispanic Heritage Committee’s Community Service Award and with his wife, Clara, the Jackson County, Mo.’s Legacy List of the 175 most influential builders of Jackson County; and

 

WHEREAS, Manuel was an example of leadership and community involvement; NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council honor the legacy of Manuel Reyes and thank him for his dedication to the people of Kansas City; and

  

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof is presented to Manuel’s wife Clara, his children Diana and Edward, and the staff of Dos Mundos newspaper, with the appreciation of Mayor and Council and success in his leadership position.
