RESOLUTION NO. 120396

 

 

Declaring June Sweet Potato Planting Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, according to the University of Missouri Extension, sweet potatoes are high in fiber and in vitamins A and C and are low in fat, making them a very nutritious vegetable that grows well in our region; and

WHEREAS, sweet potatoes are a beautiful landscaping plant that is low maintenance and well suited for public flower beds that can also provide a delicious healthful harvest; and

WHEREAS, this is the fifth year of the Food Not Lawns Kansas City Sweet Potato Project that teaches residents how to grow sweet potatoes in their yards and community gardens and provides a source of transplants and volunteers; and

WHEREAS, this year a collaborative effort among Food Not Lawns Kansas City, Troost Village Community Association, the Society of St. Andrew West and Girl Scout volunteers hopes to grow 20,000 pounds of sweet potatoes at Kansas City area urban farms, home gardens, community gardens, church and business grounds, parks and vacant lots, with half of the harvest donated to Harvesters and other food pantries to feed those in need in the Kansas City area; and

WHEREAS, project volunteers hope to plant 20,000 sweet potato transplants during the month of June for harvest in October; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby designate June as Sweet Potato Planting Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to organizers of this project.
