RESOLUTION NO. 080665

 

Honoring Lt. John Wilburn Davis for an outstanding life and his dedication to his God, his country and his family.

 

WHEREAS, at the time of Lt. John Wilburn Davis death on June 19, 2008, he was the last of the original Tuskegee Airmen and thus the last African American from Kansas City to see combat action in World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, Lt. Davis was accepted into the United States Army Air Corps Training Program and was assigned to Tuskegee, Alabama where he completed his academic and flight training as a graduate of Class 44E and was the last graduating class of the Tuskegee Airmen sent to the European Theatre of World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, over the past year, Lt. Davis has received many honors: he was accompanied to Washington for the Gold Medal Ceremonies by Ed King, President of the Heart of America Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., was named the Grand Marshall of the annual Air Show held in Olathe, Kansas by the Commemorative Air Force; was honored by the Kansas City Royals by getting to throw out the first ball; he was honored along with 40 other original Tuskegee airmen and/or widows in a Gold Medal Ceremony at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri; and was honored by the Greater Kansas City Council of the Navy League; and

 

WHEREAS, Lt. Davis was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross during World War II and while in Washington, D.C., for the Gold Medal Ceremonies was honored by Congress and President George W. Bush and presented the coveted Congressional Gold Medal; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Lt. John Wilburn Davis for an outstanding life and his dedication to his God, his country and his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Margaret A. Davis in token of the respect in which he is held and the sympathy extended to his family and friends.
