RESOLUTION NO. 120846

Recognizing BikeWalkKC, the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department and the Kansas City Public School District in promoting International Walk to School Month and Safe Routes to School Programs in October, 2012.

WHEREAS, BikeWalkKC, the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department and the Kansas City Public School District have been proactive in promoting International Walk to School Day events and providing region-wide resources to schools in Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, a lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other significant health problems among children, and being able to walk or bicycle to school offers an opportunity to build activity into daily routine; and

WHEREAS, driving students to school via private vehicle contributes to traffic congestion and air pollution; and

WHEREAS, an important role for parents, caregivers and teachers is to educate children about pedestrian safety, to make them aware of the difficulties and dangers that children face on their trip to school each day to and understand the health and environmental risks related to physical inactivity and air pollution; and

WHEREAS, community members should make a plan to make immediate changes to enable children to safely walk and bike in their communities and develop a list of suggestions for improvements that can be done over time; and

WHERAS, children, parents, caregivers and community leaders around the world are joining together to walk to school and evaluate walking and bicycling conditions in their communities; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and the Council of Kansas City recognize BikeWalkKC, the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department and the Kansas City, Missouri Public School District for their role in promoting Safe Routes to School and educating the public about International Walk to School Month (October, 2012) and International Walk to School Day (October 3, 2012); and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Sarah Shipley of BikeWalkKC, Connie Farrakhan of the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department and Patrick Kneib, Director of Transportation for Kansas City Public Schools for recognizing the need to offer children a safer environment and health lifestyle which the Mayor and the Council hold in high regard.
