RESOLUTION NO. 190155

Declaring February 25-March 3, 2019, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, the 2019 theme for the National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is “Come as You Are”;

WHEREAS, the goal of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is “send a message to individuals at all stages of body acceptance and eating disorders recovery that their stories are valid”; and

WHEREAS, anyone can develop an eating disorder, regardless of race, gender, age or socioeconomic class; and

WHEREAS, eating disorders will affect 30 million Americans at some point in their lives; and

WHEREAS, left untreated, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses; and

WHEREAS, everybody is different, and we should “respect people based on the qualities of their character and accomplishments, rather than . . . their appearance”; NOW, THEREFORE,

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare February 25-March 3, 2019, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ashley Bough for her continued efforts to “Come as She Is” and encourage others to share their stories so that others may come forward, with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens to increase awareness, education, and services for eating disorders which impact millions of people each year.
