Description: The Human Rights Commission is a seven-member entity that reviews a variety of civil and human rights complaints. Members are appointed by the Mayor. The commission is authorized by state statue RSMO 213.020 and 213.135 to hear complaints that violate RSMO Chapter 213 in accordance with procedures set forth by the statue. Commission members are empowered to (1) develop task forces (e.g. education, labor, religion, hate and bias crimes, etc.); (2) work with civil rights and community organizations to review patterns of discrimination and hate crimes in Kansas City; and (3) hold hearings regarding issues on general or specific civil and human rights affecting citizens. This is a brief overview of the mission of the Human Rights Commission. APPOINTMENT PROCESS: Mayor makes all 7 appointments from the City at-large. NUMBER OF CITY MEMBERS: 7 TERM: 3 years
